White Plains Hospital Center (WPHC) will be offering the following classes, events and support groups during the month of February . Events are held at White Plains Hospital Center, 41 East Post Road, White Plains, NY, unless otherwise noted.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Beautiful Hand-Made Knits on Sale

Hand-made hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters, afghans, baby blankets, pet sweaters and more will be on sale in the Hospital Lobby on February 10 th, and 24 thfrom 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. All items are created by the Knitwits, the Hospital’s talented volunteer knitting group, and proceeds from the sales will benefit the Hospital. For more information, call 914-681-1225.

 BLOOD DRIVES

 Blood Donor Center

The Blood Donor Center is open every weekday 8:45 am – 4:00 pm. Saturday hours are available. Donors must be 17 – 75 years of age, in good health and weigh at least 110 lbs. Appointments are recommended. Call 914-681-1056.

 FREE SCREENINGS

 Blood Pressure Screening

Sponsored by the Auxiliary of WPHC, a free blood pressure screening is available every third Wednesday of the month, February 17 th, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, in the Hospital Lobby. For further information, call 914-681-1225.

 Health Check

A free screening program makes nurses available to answer health questions and perform free blood pressure and blood sugar testing. Screenings will take place at the following locations:

 

  • Community Room, 76 South Lexington Ave, White Plains, the first Wednesday of every month starting February 3 rd, 1:00 – 2:30 pm
  • 167-169 Terrace Avenue , Port Chester, the second Wednesday of every month starting February 10 th, 11:00 am- 12:30 pm.
  • 10 Drew Street , Port Chester, the third Wednesday of every month starting February 17 th, 1:00- 2:30 pm.

SUPPORT GROUPS

 New Support Groups

 New Mother Support Group

New mothers may face unexpected challenges, with a variety of emotional and physical changes to deal with. This 5 session support group for new mothers with infants under 3 months of age will be facilitated by an experienced maternity nurse from White Plains Hospital Center, who will lead group discussion on a variety of issues. These topics include the changing role of new mother, family dynamics, sleep deprivation, isolation, and infant development, and additional areas of interest to the group. Come share with other new mothers and make new friends in the community. The 2010 Series will start on Thursday, Feburary 4 th from 1:30pm-3:00pm at Destination Maternity.  Healthy Living for Life Support Group – “ America on the Move”

A FREE Monthly Group for anyone who is having difficulty trying to maintain a healthy weight. All ages are welcome for open and frank discussions about weight loss, diets, meal preparation, exercise, and more. Exchange ideas and resources with others who understand how you feel. A White Plains Hospital Center registered nurse will facilitate these meetings. Also, experts will provide mini-educational lectures on topics related to weight management. Meets 3 rd Tuesday of every month, 6:00-7:00 PM in the White Plains Hospital Center Auditorium unless otherwise noted.

 Asthma Workshop

A FREE asthma workshop. All your questions will be answered including- What is asthma? How is it treated? What are the triggers? Participating WPHC clinical staff include, Joli Yuknek, MD, Emergency Medicine; Kira Geraci-Ciardullo, MD, Pediatrics; Lyn Harper, Registered Respiratory Therapist and Director Respiratory Care. Epilepsy Support Group

This program, sponsored by the Epilepsy Life Links and Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group, provides information and support to individuals who are newly diagnosed, feeling isolated or caring for someone with epilepsy. Please join us on the first Thursday of every month, February 4 th, from 6:30 -7:30 pm, in the Medical Library of WPHC on Davis Ave.-East Post Road in White Plains, NY 10601.  Heart Club-

The Heart Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month, on February2 ndat 7:00 pm in Jazzman’s Café. The Heart Club provides educational lectures for heart patients, families and friends.  Huntington’s Disease Caregivers Support Group

 Ostomy Support Group

A support group for ostomy patients and those with related intestinal disorders. All ages are welcome for open and frank discussions of life as an “ostomate” in a casual setting. The group meets on the third Tuesday of every month, February 16 th , at 7:30 pm in the Medical Library.  Parenting Group

 Perinatal Bereavement Support Group

 Stroke Support Group

The Stroke Support Group will meet every second Thursday of the month ( Thursday February 11 th),from 11:00am – 12:00pm, in the Centennial Room at White Plains Hospital Center. THE ANXIETY AND PHOBIA TREATMENT CENTER

WPHC’s Anxiety and Phobia Treatment center is the first hospital-based center of its kind in the country—providing groundbreaking therapies and programs since 1971. For details on the programs listed below, call 914-681-1038.

 

 

Anxiety & Phobia Support Groups

Ongoing support groups are held for people with phobias, panic attacks and anxiety disorders. Anxiety and Phobia Support Group meets Wednesdays at 7:00 pm, cost is $30 per meeting; or Wednesday at 12:00 pm, cost is $20 per meeting. Sessions meet in room 4310 at the Hospital. Freedom to Fly Workshop

Six-session program held at Westchester County Airport and led by Martin Seif, Ph.D. Learn to

overcome your fear of flying with education and supportive exposure. Group members participate

in a graduation flight to Boston. The next workshop will begin to meet Tuesday April 6 th at

Health Anxiety Program

A six-week program for people with an exaggerated fear of physical illness and who worry constantly about their health. Led by Martin Diner, MD. The program will begin to meet Monday February 8 th at 7:00 pm. Call 681-1038 for more information.

 

Phobia Workshops

Participate in nine weekly group meetings with a professional, and seven one-hour practice sessions with a phobia counselor. The workshop will begin Wednesday, March 17 hat 6:00 pm. Public Speaking/Social Anxiety Program

Weekly meetings focused on social anxiety and public speaking. Work at your own pace, attempting manageable yet challenging exercises without pressure to perform. Child Passenger Safety Program

A program offered by White Plains Hospital Center and the Greenburgh Police Department with the intention to educate parents and caregivers on car seat safety, injury prevention, and health promotion, and to ensure that babies and children are correctly and safely secured while traveling in a motor vehicle. Last year the child seat safety program inspected over 1400 car seats and only 10 were installed correctly!

  • Child Safety Seat Check

Experts are available to check your car seat for free on the first and third Saturdays. February 6 thand February 20 th from 11:00 A.M to 2:00 P.M. at the Greenburgh Police Department Child Seat Inspection Station at 11 Hillside Avenue. No appointments are necessary.

 Mall Walkers

Walk for fitness and fun! This group meets three times a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday9:00 – 10:00 am, at the Galleria Mall, Fashion Level 2.  Voice Care Emergency Response

DICKSTEIN CANCER TREATMENT CENTER :

 Cancer Genetics Program

White Plains Hospital Center offers genetic counseling to individuals with a personal or family history of cancer. The aim is to provide clear, relevant information regarding cancer risks and to identify individuals at risk for hereditary cancers. Counselors are available Monday-Thursday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Look Good…Feel Better

 The Men’s Health Forum

If you or your spouse has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, is currently in treatment, or has completed treatment, this forum is for you. Each month a guest speaker discusses various health topics related to prostate cancer. Following the lecture, spouses meet separately with a volunteer family support person. Yoga

 White Plains Hospital Center Piggy Bank Thrift Store

Sponsored by the Auxiliary of White Plains Hospital Center, the Piggy Bank sells new and gently-used women’s and children’s clothing at discount prices, and sales benefit various programs at WPHC. METROCARD VAN MAKES ITS MONTHLY ROUNDS

The full-service MetroCard van will make its rounds in Westchester to assist riders interested in purchasing MetroCards.
Staffed by MTA New York City Transit Authority and Westchester County Department of Transportation employees, the van is a "one-stop shop" and is equipped to assist bus riders with all their MetroCard business. Riders will be able to buy a regular MetroCard, apply for a Reduced-Fare MetroCard if they are 65 and older or have qualifying disabilities and refill their existing MetroCards.

AT THE WESTCHESTER COUNTY CENTER IN DECEMBER

Westchester residents don’t have to travel far to see a first-rate production of everyone’s holiday favorite, “The Nutcracker.” The Westchester Ballet Company’s production of this magical tale of a young girl’s imaginary journey on Christmas Eve rivals the best productions in the New York metropolitan area, and all at a very affordable price, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.

Performances will take place on Friday, December 18, 10 a.m., Saturday, December 19, 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 20, 2 p.m.

For the past 13 years, the Westchester Ballet Company has been thrilling County Center audiences with its magical production of this holiday classic that has become a tradition for families and captivates audiences of all ages every year. Under the direction of Beth Fritz-Logrea and Jean Logrea, this production features 90 professionally trained student dancers from communities throughout Westchester and neighboring counties, along with professional guest soloists. Add classic choreography, beautiful costumes, magnificent scenery and special stage effects, along with very affordable ticket prices, and it’s a sure-fire hit for your family this holiday season.
