ASIAN HERITAGE KICKS OFF SUMMER SERIES OF ETHNIC FESTIVALS THIS SUMMER

Experience a variety of cultures from around the world this summer without leaving Westchester County when the tenth annual Asian-American Heritage Celebration kicks off the annual series of cultural heritage festivals in county parks on Saturday, May 31, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.

The festival is presented by the Westchester and Hudson Valley Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans. The event is sponsored by Westchester County Parks and the Westchester Arts Council.

The day’s festivities will feature a wide array of live performances of the music and dance of many Asian countries, including China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Burma. The festival will feature the Magical Chinese Opera Face Show and include Kung Fu and Japanese drumming, along with Asian arts, cultural and religious exhibits. There will also be free medical and dental screenings. Many school groups will take part in these presentations and there will be a special magic show, and a Lego and robotic demonstration by the American Robotic School. Kids can also learn the art of Chinese paper cutting, and enjoy games and face painting. There will also be a variety of tasty foods, including many Asian delicacies.

The festival will be held rain or shine. Seating is informal; bring blankets or folding chairs for seating on the lawn.

The Kensico Dam Plaza is located in Valhalla at the north end of the Bronx River Parkway. Admission and parking are free.

The Asian Heritage Festival is the first of 12 cultural heritage celebrations to be held on Sundays in county parks this summer. The other heritage festivals in the series are:

Food Fun & Fabulous Art
at the Westchester Arts Council’s Annual Extravaganza

 (February 22. 2008, White Plains, NY) ---- A warm spring night, food, fun and fabulous art set the scene at the Westchester Arts Council’s annual ArtsBash party! This arts extravaganza will feature cuisine prepared by leading chefs of Westchester, New York City, Fairfield, and Rockland, along with a special preview of the exhibit Locally Grown and open artist’s studios throughout the weekend.  ArtsBash 2008 will kick off at 6 pm on Friday, May 16. The festivities take place in the spectacular Grand Banking Room of the Arts Exchange, 31 Mamaroneck Avenue in downtown White Plains, and spill out onto Mamaroneck Avenue.  ArtsBash party goers will be able to tour the Arts Exchange building, visiting artists’ studios, tasting food, and taking in the exhibit. Guests will be treated to exquisite cuisine prepared by the best chefs in town. The featured exhibition Locally Grown, curated by Kenise Barnes, will highlight the work of several Westchester-based artists including Mia Brownell and Martin Kruck. The preview party offers the chance to be the first to see this exhibition and meet the artists - it opens to the public only on the following day.

 ArtsBash continues on Saturday, May 17 with a free open house party at the Arts Exchange, home of the Westchester Arts Council. The public is invited to drop in, view the exhibit participate in the day’s activities. The Arts Council staff is hard at work planning a day full of surprises for the whole family. Visit the New Office of Tourism Outdoor Display Area

Visions of upcoming Westchester events will now catch the eye of passers by on busy Mamaroneck Avenue in downtown White Plains. A large display space, part of the Westchester County Office of Tourism (at 222 Mamaroneck Avenue), has been made available to county attractions to showcase and promote their upcoming events.

Each month a different member of the Seven Wonders of Westchester will decorate the 6'x3' space with a colorful display highlighting their attraction and a signature special event. The Seven Wonders of Westchester is a consortium of some of the most visited historical sites, museums and performing arts centers in the county.
