SPANO SIGNS LEGISLATION PROHIBITING SALE OF HERBAL CIGARETTES TO MINORS

County Executive Andy Spano signed legislation on recently outlawing the sale of herbal cigarettes to minors. The signing of the legislation, unanimously approved by the County's Board of Legislators, took place in the County Office Building in White Plains.

The legislation, introduced by County Legislators Tom Abinanti and Lois Bronz, both of Greenburgh, is intended to prevent the brightly-colored packs of sweet-smelling herbal cigarettes from becoming products that encourage young people to experiment with stronger products, such as tobacco.

Abinanti and Bronz say that herbal cigarettes target youth and encourage them to develop smoking habits. Health officials also have warned of the potential harm from smoking herbal cigarettes, despite the fact that they do not contain nicotine.

Abinanti, Bronz, and County Legislator Andrea Stewart-Cousins of Yonkers joined Spano for the bill's signing.
